City Heights Farmers’ Market

It is also be the first Food Stamps accessible farmers’ market in San Diego County and the only market situated within a primarily low-income neighborhood. Because it is the first of its’ kind, the market also serve as a laboratory for innovative outreach and incentive strategies and has inspired additional markets in similar low income neighborhoods.

San Diego Nutrition NetworkSan Diego Nutrition Network, in collaboration with San Diego County Health and Human Services, the San Diego Hunger Coalition, and 2-1-1 San Diego have identified the barriers for San Diego Food Stamp eligible residents to apply. Media and education activities are focused on a county-wide campaign to dispel these myths about participation, address systematic barriers, and encourage those who are eligible to apply. In addition, this project is committed to link nutrition education with Food Stamps by providing tips on shopping for healthy food on a tight budget.

Star Pick The purpose of the Star Pick retail pilot is to increase access to Senate Bill (SB) 19 compliant, individually-packaged, healthy snacks by placing them in the high-traffic, point-of-purchase area of checkout stands. Built into this initiative is a research and evaluation component, which is necessary to gauge the successfulness of this intervention. The groundbreaking healthy checkout stand retail pilot being implemented at Northgate Gonzalez Market in Chula Vista will create a successful, replicable model of healthy checkout stands that can be incorporated into any and all stores and markets. This will positively impact the health of the community and inform future health and legislative policies. This project has the potential to change the food environment of communities not only in San Diego, but all over the United States.
